Mrs. Hira Naik, a 96-year old lady, was reported at the hospital Emergency Room with complaints of severe back pain and heaviness in the chest, symptoms of a heart attack. Upon primary inspection, the ECG confirmed the occurrence of an acute heart attack along with artery blockage.

An angioplasty was required to be performed in order to avoid further damage to the heart muscle, which might have led to shock and heart failure. Though the patient was physically fit, relatives were concerned about her age. Upon assessment and discussions with the relatives, Dr. Bhushan Bari recommended Temporary Pacemaker Insertion and Emergency Angioplasty. Later, Dr. Bari executed the procedures successfully and the patient tolerated them well. The temporary pacemaker was removed and the patient was discharged on the third day.

The procedure has been time-tested and it saves precious lives by reducing long-term complications by restoring blood supply to the heart. This procedure is rarely performed for patients of such high age, but it confirms the fact that there is no age bar for undergoing an angioplasty if the patient is physically fit.
